A 124 year old tradition, the Boston Marathon is one of the most prestigious marathon races in the US.
The 2020 Boston Marathon will take place on April 20, 2020, marking the 124th annual running of the marathon. The race is traditionally held the third monday of April on Patriots’ Day, a state holiday in Massachusetts commemorating the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Over 500,000 spectators come to watch the Marathon every year, making it one of the most-watched sporting events not just in Boston but the entire world.
The Boston Marathon is the world’s oldest annual marathon and one of six World Marathon Major races. The very first Boston Marathon took place in 1897 with only 15 competitors running in a marathon that covered 24.5 miles. The miles were extended in 1924 to the Olympic standard, 26.2 miles. The race course winds through eight Massachusetts towns, following an historic course that leads through the center of Boston, including the “Scream Tunnel” where students from nearby Wellesley College gather to cheer on beleaguered runners and a grueling and difficult stretch up Heartbreak Hill near Boston College.
Those wishing to participate in the 2020 Boston Marathon must be 18 or older and meet the qualifying standards of the race; namely, to complete a standard recognized marathon course eighteen months prior to the Boston event. The course must be completed according to a timetable, which varies by age and sex.
