Every third weekend in October the world’s best rowers gather for a once in a lifetime race along the Charles River in Boston.
The Head of the Charles Regatta is the largest two-day rowing event in the world. 11,000 rowers and over 300,000 spectators descend on Boston every October to take part in this two-day rowing competition.
Since its inception in 1965, the Head of the Charles Regatta has welcomed the world’s best crew teams to the banks of the Charles River to compete. Weaving through Back Bay, Allston and Brighton crowds flock to the river’s banks and bridges (River Street, Western Ave., Weeks, Anderson, Eliot & Boston University) to cheer on their teams as they cut artfully through the water in more than 55 different events.
Plan ahead to save your space in one of the many exhibition areas located along the banks of the river. The Weld Exhibition, near the halfway mark of the race, hosts vendors as well as food and drink. Reunion Village, directly across from the Weld Exhibition, offers food, refreshments and a beer garden from where you can watch the rowers. While the Eliot Bridge Enclosure, while while a little pricey for a day pass, is known to host top Boston restaurants and chefs from the likes of Citizen Public House and Oyster Bar to cater their area. Regardless, wherever you choose to watch the race you are guaranteed to have a great view and a great time.
